KPN share price below EUR 5: drastic times call for drastic measures

KPN's share price is trapped in a downward spiral. On 02 November, it closed at EUR 4.83, down from a peak of EUR 12.35 in October 2010 and showing a clear downward trend from around EUR 12 in March 2011. The arrival of America Movil as a shareholder, which built up its 28 percent stake at a price of around EUR 8 per share, has not proven any help. Ziggo, which has offered since 2011 an alternative for Dutch investors, has at the same time shown a steadily rising trend since its listing in March 2011, despite the price recently taking a hit after disappointing growth figures for Q3.

Google Now Moving Well Beyond “Search” With Mobile Assistant

Almost exactly three years ago then Google employee Marissa Mayer described “the perfect search engine” in an interview with IDG News. She said it would be one “that could understand speech, questions, phrases, what entities you’re talking about, concepts. It would be able to search all of the world’s information, [find] different ideas and concepts, and bring them back to you in a presentation that was really informative and coherent.”

Three out of four smartphones sold now use Google's Android

Google's Android operating system has increased its worldwide market share to 75pc.
Three out of four smartphones sold in the third quarter featured Google’s Android operating system, research shows.
136 million Android smartphones were sold in the third quarter, boosting Android’s share of the worldwide market to 75pc, up from 57.5pc the previous year.

Deutsche Telekom Loses Second Top Court Suit, Telegate Says

Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE), Germany’s biggest phone company, lost another bid in the country’s top civil court to overturn a damage award won by Telegate AG. (TGT).
The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe backed a lower court ruling requiring Telekom to pay 50 million euros ($64.4 million), directory service provider Telegate said in an ad hoc statement today.

A Good Quarter For Social Media: LinkedIn And Yelp Overachieve

In what's turning out to be a good earnings season for social media companies, on Thursday LinkedIn and Yelp joined Facebook and Yahoo! in reporting better-than-predicted third quarter numbers. LinkedIn reported net revenues of $252 million, and Yelp boasted $36.4 million for the period.

Swisscom to cut 400 jobs, makes CHF 50 mln Q4 provision

Swisscom said it plans to shed some 400 jobs in 2013 but will create about 300 in growth areas. The cost will be booked as a one-off restructuring provision in the fourth quarter of 2012 of around CHF 50 million. It said new businesses have made up for a decline in revenue from voice telephony over the past ten years, and job composition has changed, too.
