Google Launches Knowledge Graph To Provide Answers, Not Just Links

Hinted at for months, Google formally launched its “Knowledge Graph” today. The new technology is being used to provide popular facts about people, places and things alongside Google’s traditional results. It also allows Google to move toward a new way of searching not for pages that match query terms but for “entities” or concepts that the words describe.

Google to meet French regulator on privacy policy

Google will meet with France's data protection watchdog next week to answer questions about its new user privacy policy as part of a Europe-wide investigation being led by the French regulator.
France's "Commission Nationale de l'Informatique" (CNIL) is examining Google's new approach to privacy on behalf of data protection regulators of the 27 European Union member states to determine if it conforms with European law.

36% of SME use Facebook, 60% are digital dinosaurs (UK)

Over one third of UK small businesses say that they now use Facebook to drum up new customers – more than local directories such as Yellow Pages and Thomson and substantially more than print or online advertising. That’s the findings of a survey by website builder BaseKit. They found that 36% of small businesses in Britain use the social network to market themselves, where just a quarter say they rely on local directories as a source of new customers.

Savings Network Saavi Selects Localeze for Local Business Content (US)

Business listings provider Localeze announced today that it will provide online business listings to Savvi, a savings network. Localeze business listings are standardized across its list of approximately 150 local search platform partners, including search engines, online directories, social networks, mobile apps and personal navigation devices. Savvi offers member-sourced and shared local deals in addition to discussion forums and advice from its community of bloggers.

Social Advertising Revenues Rise in Latest BIA/Kelsey Forecast (US)

In the run-up to Facebook’s ballyhooed IPO, BIA/Kelsey has released Wave III of its U.S. Social Media Advertising Forecast, which reveals overall market acceleration in 2012 and 2013, and steady growth in locally-targeted social spend.
From 2011 to 2016, U.S. social ad revenues will climb from $3.8 billion to $9.8 billion (21 percent CAGR). Several drivers will spur this growth: increased market awareness and adoption, improvement in ad unit performance, and greater penetration of dynamic formats such as video (with YouTube as the leader).

Bing’s New Social-Friendly Search Interface Now Live

The new Bing interface, with a healthy dose of social connections and discovery, is now live for all users.
Bing’s announcement today says that anyone can access the new interface at www.bing.com/new, but you should also see a new message atop the Bing home page that invites you to try “the best search, now with people from your social networks.”
