A Good Quarter For Social Media: LinkedIn And Yelp Overachieve

In what's turning out to be a good earnings season for social media companies, on Thursday LinkedIn and Yelp joined Facebook and Yahoo! in reporting better-than-predicted third quarter numbers. LinkedIn reported net revenues of $252 million, and Yelp boasted $36.4 million for the period.

U.K. telecommunications operator BT Group PLC Thursday cut its annual revenue guidance, blaming a sharp slowdown in spending by its business customers because of the tough economic environment and regulatory changes.

Swisscom to cut 400 jobs, makes CHF 50 mln Q4 provision

Swisscom said it plans to shed some 400 jobs in 2013 but will create about 300 in growth areas. The cost will be booked as a one-off restructuring provision in the fourth quarter of 2012 of around CHF 50 million. It said new businesses have made up for a decline in revenue from voice telephony over the past ten years, and job composition has changed, too.

Eircom to slash 2,000 jobs in new cost-savings programme

Irish operator Eircom plans to reduce its workforce by 2,000, from its currently level at 5,700, as part of a new cost-savings programme set to significantly reduce the group's cost base over the coming 18 months. The operator will also modernise work practices and consolidate under-utilised office locations across the country.

Google Updates Earth With “Tour Guide” & More 3D Imagery

Google has released a new desktop version of Google Earth (version 7) that includes features previously released in its mobile version. The new desktop features include what Google calls a “tour guide” for more than 11,000 locations in over 110 countries and regions, and more 3D imagery for several cities around the world.

Google launches voice assistant to take on Siri

Google has released an update to its search app that includes voice recognition, putting it in competition with Apple's digital assistant Siri.
Early reviews suggest that the software is fast and accurate.
The release comes in the same week that Apple ousted its senior vice president of iOS software Scott Forstall, who was in charge of Siri.

Yandex’s Q3 2012: Revenues up 43% year-on-year to $235.2m, profit up 34% to $74.2 million

Russian Internet giant Yandex has seen revenues rise by 41% year-on-year in its unaudited Q3 2012 financial results, just released.
The Moscow-based company is reporting revenues of RUR 7.3 billion ($235.2 million), up 41% compared with the same quarter last year. Income from operations is up 43% year-on-year, at $82.3 million. Profit for Q3 is RUR 2.3 billion ($74.2 million), up year-on-year.
