Groupon set to diversify into a ‘local trading place’

Groupon’s smart new international HQ in the heart of corporate Berlin was officially opened in a low-key event on Thursday evening by CEO Andrew Mason.
The former Sat. 1 building on Oberwallstrasse has room for 1,000 employees in a variety of different roles. Mason was conspicuous by his absence at the press conference following the ceremony, with the troubled company set to publish its latest quarterly figures in mid-August.
But there was reason to be upbeat as it was revealed that Groupon plans to diversify its business from daily deal vouchers into establishing an online local trading place.

411.ca Brings More Canadian Innovation to Local Search

411.ca, Canada's Local Search Engine, has launched tools that let you find businesses near a specific location, such as a street intersection, landmark or postal code. Known as proximity or point-of-interest searches, they reflect the new way Canadians seek information. "People often want search results near their home or close to a particular spot - not results for an entire city," explains Steve Curry, 411.ca's President and CEO. "Our new features give you those options, wherever you are in Canada."

Yelp Looking At European Expansion With U.K. Operations

Yelp has continued to grow at a rapid pace since its IPO, and has expanded into various new international markets like Norway, Denmark and Finland. Last week, it extended its operations to the U.K., and opened a new sales office in London. Yelp is making an aggressive push to expand into Europe, and will be using its U.K. operations as the main hub for its European expansion plans.

Google has announced a slew of updates to its perennially popular (and ubiquitous) Maps service, as it rolls out more details and information for Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lesotho, Macau, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican City.

Deutsche Telekom Ordered to Compensate Telegate Over Data Costs

German telephone directory search company Telegate AG said Thursday it won two compensation claims against Deutsche Telekom AG for overcharging for data costs, after the Federal High Court dismissed an appeal by Deutsche Telekom, with one more ruling outstanding.

Facebook yesterday saw a decline in share price on a report of falling user numbers in key markets like the U.S. and Europe, but in a sign of how it is firming up its business, Facebook is also making significantly more money and getting more sticky with its advertising, on the back of newer, more targeted ad formats like Sponsored Stores and mobile ads.

Texting overtakes talking in UK, says Ofcom study

People in the UK are now more likely to make a phone call, according to new research by Ofcom.
While 58% of people communicated via texts on a daily basis in 2011, only 47% made a daily mobile call, said the country's communications industry regulator.
